Axolotls are carnivorous ambush predators. Proper nutrition supports growth, limb regeneration, immune function, and longevity.
Overfeeding and inappropriate foods are common problems.
Staple Foods
Best Options
Earthworms (nightcrawlers)
High-quality axolotl pellets
Occasional
Bloodworms (treat only)
Blackworms (if clean and quarantined like ours)
Freshwater Fish (other than goldfish)
Avoid most feeder fish, insects with hard shells, or mammal meats.
Feeding Frequency
- Juveniles: Daily
- Adults: Every 2–3 days
Feed until gently rounded, not bloated.
Impaction Risk
Axolotls ingest food whole. Substrate choice and oversized prey can cause impaction.
Always match prey size to head width.
Never use substrate larger than fine sand. Refer to Tank Setup for more information.
Common Mistakes
Feeding only bloodworms
Overfeeding juveniles
Leaving uneaten food in the tank
