Temperature & Cooling
Axolotls are cold-water amphibians. Heat stress is one of the fastest ways to shorten their lifespan.
Unlike fish, axolotls cannot adapt to warmer conditions over time.
Safe Temperature Range
- Ideal: 60–64°F (15–18°C)
- Acceptable short term: up to 66°F
- Danger zone: 68°F and above
Chronic exposure to elevated temperatures weakens the immune system and increases disease risk.
Why Temperature Matters
Higher temperatures:
- Increase metabolism
- Reduce dissolved oxygen
- Accelerate waste toxicity
- Promote bacterial growth
These factors compound quickly.
Cooling Methods
Recommended
- Aquarium chillers
- Room air conditioning
- Evaporative cooling (fans, with monitoring)
Not Recommended
- Ice bottles (causes swings)
- Frozen water additions
- Uncontrolled basement tanks
Temperature stability is more important than temporary fixes.
Seasonal Planning
Cooling must be planned before acquiring an axolotl. Many homes exceed safe temperatures during summer months without intervention.
Common Mistakes
Assuming “room temperature” is safe
Cooling reactively instead of proactively
Allowing daily temperature swings
