Before You Buy

Before you buy

Prepare first. Choose second.

An axolotl should arrive only after the aquarium is cycled, cooling is proven, supplies are on hand, and everyone responsible for care understands the commitment.

Match the animal to your life

The routine is simple only when the system is ready.

Consider housing, electricity, summer temperatures, maintenance time, travel, veterinary access, and a decade or more of responsibility.

Space and utilities

A filled aquarium is heavy, requires a safe location, and may need fans, air conditioning, or a chiller.

Weekly maintenance

Testing, waste removal, feeding, water changes, and equipment checks must continue during busy weeks.

Long-term care

Plan for moves, school, travel, power outages, veterinary costs, and a qualified backup keeper.

Use a real readiness check

Every item should be true before purchase.

Do not use the animal to cycle the aquarium or treat shipping day as the deadline for setup.

  • The aquarium is fully cycled and processing waste
  • Ammonia and nitrite remain at zero
  • Temperature stays in the planned range during warm weather
  • Substrate, hides, and filtration are safe and gentle
  • Food, conditioner, and a liquid test kit are available
  • A veterinarian and emergency cooling plan have been identified
  • The receiving person can be present for delivery

Evaluate the listing and seller

Good information should be easy to find.

Confirm whether the animal shown is the one you will receive, review health and shipping terms, and ask for missing lineage or husbandry information before checkout.

Listing clarity

Look for current photographs, size or age, morph, feeding status, and WYSIWYG status.

Seller standards

Expect captive-bred animals, humane packing, weather-aware scheduling, and honest communication.

Your right to pause

A responsible seller will understand a delay for cycling, cooling, weather, or unanswered questions.
