Arrival and quarantine
Make the first week quiet and predictable.
Prepare the receiving space before delivery, inspect the shipment promptly, document the animal’s condition, and reduce unnecessary change while it settles.
Prepare the receiving plan
Shipping day should contain no setup surprises.
Confirm the delivery window, monitor weather, prepare the cycled aquarium or appropriate quarantine system, and keep clean dedicated equipment nearby.
Clear your schedule
Arrange for someone informed to receive the package immediately and follow the seller’s live-arrival instructions.
Verify the environment
Test water and temperature before delivery rather than while the animal is waiting.
Separate equipment
Use dedicated tubs, nets, siphons, and towels when quarantine is needed to prevent cross-contamination.
Open, observe, document
Follow the seller’s written instructions first.
Photograph the unopened package, packing, bags or containers, and animal. Note the arrival time and any obvious leak, temperature problem, injury, or unusual condition.
Do not delay documentation
Live-arrival policies often have specific reporting windows. Record concerns before discarding packaging.
Limit handling
Move the animal with a clean container and use only the acclimation process appropriate to the seller’s instructions and water conditions.
Communicate clearly
Send the order number, timeline, photos, and concise observations if there is a problem.
Favor stability over attention
Observe appetite and behavior without constant intervention.
Keep lighting low, avoid handling, maintain clean cool water, and make changes based on tests rather than anxiety. Quarantine protects established animals and creates a simpler observation environment.
Track daily
Record temperature, water results, appetite, waste, buoyancy, skin, and gill appearance.
Feed conservatively
Offer the food and schedule recommended for the animal, then remove leftovers promptly.
Escalate persistent concerns
Contact the seller and an experienced veterinarian when symptoms continue or look severe.
